London Global Table 3rd April 2013

We meet 12 – 2 in Room 2:1 *[no food or drink permitted]* of the SES, 11 Mandeville Place W1U‘MATTERS IN THE AIR’ ………some of which participants could choose to develop…..*

On what do we predicate our thoughts and actions?

1. A seasonal ponderingCovenant, Spirituality and Soul, like Land, Water and Air are all containing, that is, contextual concepts and require us to be clear in their use as to whether our reference is an ordinate/primary or a sub-ordinate/secondary use. There is a tendency for their use in the subordinate sense without reference to the ordinate/contextual/universal aspect, and that causes us unconsciously to own them for our selves.

From this it usually follows that personal care [pastoral] dominates our attitudes and actions to the neglect of public struggles [prophetic]. So we continue to serve vested interests rather than the common good or inclusive justice [Kin[g]dom or reign of God/nature’s laws].

2. Now apply that to this paragraph:

“Somewhere in our history we took a wrong turn and today we are reaping the consequences. If we don’t step back to evaluate the root causes of the rolling economic crises, our civilisation is in danger of collapse. The orthodox economic framework within which we operate has blinded us to the inbuilt systemic drivers of inequality and instability, while offering no durable remedy to the problems we face.”

Organised irresponsibility is destroying our planet while we insist on maximising shareholder value.

3. AREAS FOR DEEPER INVESTIGATION

The root of all good? – Capitalism has done more to lift people out of poverty in emerging markets than all the aid of western governments. For that reason alone, surely it makes sense to embrace an economic system that creates much needed wealth. Or does capitalism represent an unhealthy love of money, which leads to an elite becoming very rich whilst vast swathes of society are excluded? And is it always the people who end up paying for the mistakes of that elite?
The BBC World Service’s weekly discussion programme, In the Balance, debates the issue with presenter, Justin Rowlatt, and a panel of guests. Plus the programme’s in-house comedian, Colm O’Regan, will be on hand with his mixture of wit and good humour.  Monday 15 April  BBC Radio Theatre, London Doors open: 12.30pm  To apply for tickets, visit bbc.co.uk/tickets.
